Homesteaded in 1909 by Martin Jorgensen, Sr., Jorgensen Land & Cattle is known for their superior genetics and is referred to by many as “The Source”. Martin Jorgensen, Jr. started performance testing in the late 1950’s, and was a pioneer in performance selection of beef cattle. He started a line breeding program that to this day is one of the most line bred Angus herds in the United States. With the use of all available selection tools such as ultrasound, genomic testing, and others, Jorgensen Land & Cattle has always been on the cutting edge of technology. The selection for feed conversion will put more money in our customer’s pocket than any carcass trait can. It is simple; less feed required per animal means you can run more cows on the same number of acres. Bulls coming from the Jorgensen Land & Cattle program have been time tested and have more pedigrees lined up for economic traits than any other herd in the United States.
Jorgensen Land & Cattle has built a bull leasing program where almost 3,500 bulls are leased annually. This marketing strategy continues to grow because many producers don’t like having bulls to care for in the off-season. After the bulls’ second breeding season is complete, they are placed into a bull marketing program where Jorgensen Land & Cattle will sell 30 month old or older bulls that have at least two breeding seasons of experience to volume buyers at a very affordable price.
Jorgensen Land & Cattle follows a very strict herd health program established by Dr. John Voegeli. We live in a nearly clean tric area. Jorgensen Land & Cattle has turned in over 50,000 tric tests, to ensure that every animal sent to our customers is healthy and safe to use in their herd. Jorgensen Land & Cattle also tests for BVD and Johne’s.
Our genetics can be found in several famous sires and dams
Sire of Traveler
Our cow herd consists of about 700 purebred females
Our genetics are extensively used in our 13 cooperators herds across the midwest, where a majority of our commercial lease bulls are calved and raised until weaning.
We market around 1000 of our older (3+ y/o) commercial lease bulls to the south (Florida, Missouri, Texas, etc.)
We semen fertility test and trichomoniasis test every one of our lease and sale animals yearly, one of the most extensive testing programs around
The bulls are maintained in our 4500 head feedlot in Ideal, SD
We also raise 400-500 head of NHTC (Non-Hormone Treated Cattle) fed cattle each year
We make every effort to keep our working facilities as updated as possible
This allows us to keep our animals and employees as safe and stress free as possible as we work upwards of 15000 head through our facilities per year
We run our cows on over 8000 acres of native grass in northern Tripp County, SD
